Thought I wouldn’t surf today. Thought I would just work. Up at dawn, drop off the groms, race back but, I checked the surf on the way home, and changed my mind. Chose to surf and work, to compromise both, and some family time. There’s always a compromise required.
We can’t have our cake, and eat it. It’s unrealistic. We have to compromise, have some cake, and eat some. Going surfing requires us to compromise elsewhere, family, chores, work, perhaps income, and therefore other things we want. Yes, there are efficiency levers, automation, alignment, delegation, speed, sleep, but with finite time, there’ll always be a compromise required.
In reality, just surfing all the time, is not realistic. Planning to just surf, is just not realistic. It will never work, and never make us happy. It’s just escapism, a dream that can’t come true. There’ll always be other needs and wants, other things to do, challenges to overcome, and frustration. Just as working all the time, just getting income, or just spending time with family, won’t work nor make us happy.
We all want and need multiple things, to spend time with loved ones, to spend time working, an income for a house, a car, food, opportunities for the groms. A coffee, a meal out, surf trips, travel, adventure. Some savings, some assets, something to fall back on. In reality, we all want, and need, more than just surfing, to be happy.
We can limit, reduce and compromise those wants, but not to zero.
And that includes surfing.
There’s a level for each of us, that gives us what we need,
and some, enough, of what we want!
The questions, for each of us, and taking into account all of the multiple things we may want, are:
How many surfs do you really want?
How many do you really need?
And how many would be enough
to make you happy?
