Look, where you want to go!

Writer: Steve GweninSteve Gwenin

I can see him coming towards me. See the section closing in front of him. I move wide, to get out of his way, he won’t make it. He straightens, as it closes, but then looks at me, and turns towards me. Staring at me, he charges pointless along the white water until he’s right in front of me. Determined not to hit me, he jumps off…

Waste high water, standing on rocks, nowhere to go. Sling the board to keep it safe, and duck under, just in time, the bottom on his board strikes my head.

Not hard, no blood, my board’s fine, no harm done.

“There’s only 3 of us in.”

He apologises instantly - “I was trying to avoid you.”

Good to know, but he didn’t do very well.

In surfing, we look where we want to go, and we go where we’re looking! If we want to go along the wave, look there, to hit the lip, look up at it, to come back down, look back down. When we don’t want to go somewhere, or run over someone, we need to look somewhere else, to go somewhere else!

It’s same in life. If you focus on your problems, it’s all you’ll see, all you think about and you’ll go there, and stay there, until you look elsewhere. Start looking for solutions, and focusing upon them, and you’ll go there instead.

To work less and surf more, stop looking at your inbox and tasklist and start looking at the waves, the cam, the forecast instead. To take a trip, start looking at tickets, where to go. To move house, location, start looking, and you’ll start moving towards it. To get fit, start looking at exercise, thinking about it, and you’ll be more likely to. To start your own business, start looking at ideas, talking about them, pull it into your focus and thoughts and start heading towards it.

Look, where you want to go. Look, where you want to be.

Stay focused on it and you’ll soon be bearing down upon it,

unable to avoid it, even if you try,

unless, of course, you look away!
